Description of Class

There is a concession available for this course for people: Under 25's, over 65's or in full time unemployment. Flash Fiction, broadly speaking, is a story told in under one thousand words. Sometimes as few as six. Small in stature, but large of heart, flash fiction leaves you thinking, it gifts you something to mull over for days, months, years to come. It’s similar to poems in this respect. In this two-hour workshop Anika Carpenter will discuss the story telling possibilities that flash fiction offers, introduce some of the various styles and share examples of well-loved pieces of flash fiction. There will be plenty of writing time too, with exercises designed especially for those interested in experimenting with this playful, rebellious and increasingly popular genre. There will be also time to read out your work at the end What to Bring Pen/pencil and a notebook and/or a laptop. Your Tutor Anika Carpenter is a flash fiction author, workshop facilitator and artist based in Brighton. Her fiction has been published in numerous anthologies, and shortlisted for the Bath Flash Fiction Award and the Bridport Prize. Her work has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net and Best Small Fiction. You can read her flash fiction online in Ellipsis Zine, Gone Lawn, The Disappointed Housewife, Fictive Dream, and many more. As well as running online and in-person writing workshops, Anika has devised and run a variety of inspiring and playful arts events. From creative speed dating sessions for artists and poets looking to collaborate, to drawing & writing games hosted in a disused swimming pool and, an orchard-based interdisciplinary retreat.
