Online Picasso Collage Workshop

Tutor: Jackie Bennett

Location: Online via Zoom
Next date: This workshop has taken place

The Cubist movement, which Picasso embraced, invented a new visual language. Collage of non-art materials, such as wallpaper, brown paper and string were used. Examples of this work can be seen in the Royal Acadamy’s recent show, “Picasso and Paper”.

In this online workshop on Zoom, participants are invited to work with any paper, card and other collage materials that they can find at home. This could be ordinary lined paper, cardboard boxes, used envelopes or wrapping paper.

We will use images of Picasso’s collages and assemblages as an inspiration to create collages in a Cubist-style. Stitches may be used to outline the designs and create ‘real’ elements such as guitar strings. There will be a suggestion of the type of shapes to assemble and cut out, to create a guitar or violin themed collage, a face, or whatever you chose.

Time scale

1.5 hours, including demonstration of making, making time and sharing time (optional).

Suggested Materials (any of these will do, plus your own additions):

Paper and card – a variety of textures and colours, magazine images, newsprint etc.

Tin foil, baking paper, kitchen roll, packaging

Thin fabric, suitable for gluing, feathers, sequins, ribbons

String and yarns for stitching and wrapping and weaving

Felt tip marker pens, pencils, crayons, paint

Glue – solid, Pritt stick type for paper and card, PVA or clear for fabrics, sequins etc. - or sellotape if no glue available

Hole punches, needles

About the tutor

Although primarily a woven textile artist, I enjoy drawing and creating collages in a spontaneous way that is quicker than can be achieved in my woven work. Teaching art techniques in a non-prescriptive but clear way, is my aim.
