“Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people, citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another. Books break the shackles of time--proof that humans can work magic." - Carl Sagan

Are you ready to create magic?  This six-week course is perfect for beginners and those who want to hone their writing skills. You’ll learn the foundations of powerful creative writing, explore writers who inspire you, and take away plenty of practical skills to develop your project further.

This is a participatory course. We’ll do inspiring writing exercises in class, and (optional) homework will be set. During the second half of each session, you’ll be invited to share your writing if you would like to. We are very much focused on creating a safe, inclusive space to read, share and talk.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who is interested in playing with words – beginners and advanced writers welcome.

What will this course cover?

  • Developing your personal writing project, whether it’s a novel, short story, memoir or creative non-fiction
  • Exploring writers who inspire you and breaking down “how they do it”
  • Building your skills as an observer – detective-with-notebook-style
  • Creating authentic characters your readers won’t forget
  • The building blocks of theme, plot, point of view and narrative tension
  • Scene setting – using filters to add extra depth to your writing
  • The editing process – how (and when) to use it
  • The chance to submit writing to the tutor for personal feedback on your project
  • What next? A look at options and ideas for publication, including breaking through obstacles to success using the tutor’s ‘Submissions Bootcamp’ model
  • Practical tips for integrating writing into your daily life so your project can grow
  • Plenty of inspiration to get you fired up and your creative juices flowing
  • The chance to share your work within a group – a fantastic way to build confidence

Please bring a notebook & pen/laptop. Hand-outs will be provided.

Wonderful handouts.  Exciting excercises, engaging tutor, opportunities to submit work, opportunities to read work in class.  Please can we have a part two!

Fantastic tutor, so many resources, tips and ideas which have enabled me to begin writing fiction

The tutor, Lucy, put so much into the course!  She was so very lively, exuberant and encouraging of all the students.  She listened to everything and helped us to get over any reservations about sharing our writing.  Every week focussed on particular topics, excercises, and in only six sessions, an enormous amount was covered.  Lucy prepared excellent notes for us to use in the sessions and afterwards.  She kept in touch with us via email so even people who did'nt attend could keep up with what happened each week.  I had complete confidence in Lucy's knowlwdge and expertise in relation to creative writing.  Her warm and friendly personality was a delight.  There was never any undue pressure to 'Perform', only encouragement.  Her love of reading and writing was an inspiration.  She is a true professional.  Her feedback was invaluable.

Enthusiastic tutor, nice bunch of people, sharing and giving feedback was great, loved the photo tasks.

Fantastic tutor, so many resources, tips and ideas which have enabled me to begin writing fiction.

Friendly and informative.  Lucy ran the classes well allowing everyone to talk and giving us lots of info and inspiration.  She was a fantastic teacher, giving us all confidence and providing feedback on our efforts.  As a complete beginner I felt supported and was able to complete several works thanks to Lucy's encouragement.

Lucy is so friendly and a great teacher.  The atmosphere is good which really helps.  Weekly handouts were a great help too.  I am keeping all the handouts as they will help my writing skills in the months/years to come.

I loved how we were able to develop our individual practice as agroup and the breadth of reference material.
