Inventing the Truth: An Introduction to Creative Non-Fiction

Tell the truth – but artfully!

Tutor: Dorothy Max Prior

Taught online via Zoom

Saturday 23 January - from 10:30 to 4:30

In this practical one-day workshop we will look at examples of good non-fiction writing across a range of forms and genres – including memoir, family history, cultural commentary and travel writing.

We will explore different ways of reflecting on true life stories – yours or other people’s – and identify the tools needed to create books, essays, blogs, broadcasts or podcasts based on those real life experiences.

All welcome, with any level of writing experience. Come with a project already envisioned, or come with a blank page and an open mind – there are no pre-requisites.

The workshop will include four Zoom sessions, interspersed with creative writing exercises done off-line to inspire you and kick-start your writing, and the group size will be limited to allow everyone the opportunity to receive feedback and encouragement.

I liked reading and hearing our work.  The activities were fab for homework.  The readings from texts inspirational and relevant.  The other students respectful and kind and interesting.  Max offered incisive feedback and was an inspiration.  The notes sent in email were excellent.

I liked the relaxed atmosphere and the fact that we were set homework which set a goal every week.

Knowledgeable tutor!  Constructive critisism and time for everyones workto be heard and critiqued.  Useful to state goals and check-in with them at the end.  Also to remember we are inventing the truth.  Such a useful, freeing idea!  Avoiding perfectionism and being flexible allows more flow.

Positive environment, great teacher, interesting group.

Very encouraging, constructive, teacher and group.  Max very positive and encouraging.  Different types of writing and group members.
