Online Beach Weaving Workshop

Tutor: Jackie Bennett
Next date: Saturday 11 July 2020 2:00 to 4:00pm

Online via Zoom, taught in a small group

Using found objects on a beach theme, including shells and flat stones, we will create mini-looms on which to weave, choosing colours and textures of warp and weft to compliment the objects. The weaving can be as simple or elaborate as you choose, with guidance from the tutor to create the effects that you want. Create a keepsake or hanging ornament.

The workshop is suitable for those who are new to weaving and those who have done some before. Please gather your own materials and yarns.

Materials list

1. Flat stones, pebbles, shells and driftwood, approx. 7cm – 30cm, depending on what size you would like to work with and what you can find. If you don’t have access to a beach, any flat stones, wood or shells from home will do. Try to find something that you find attractive or interesting (2-3 items)

2. Yarns: any knitting or crochet yarns, strong sewing thread and string that you have

4.Sellotape or masking tape

5. Large eyed tapestry needle (plastic or metal)

6. Old dining fork (optional)

About the tutor

Jackie teaches weaving as an art form, exhibits and undertakes commissions internationally. She has been weaving for over 20 years and teaching for 12 years. Jackie started weaving on small frames whilst on an Art and Design Foundation Course. She then studied African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. She completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Tapestry Weaving, at West Dean College in 1997 and continues to work in weave, sometimes including embroidery and felt-making. She is a member of the British Tapestry Group, which promotes contemporary tapestry weaving in the UK, and the East Sussex Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.

“Tapestry weaving is definitely a slow art. It is also very rewarding as the process of weaving has a calming effect, using colour and texture in a direct, hands-on and creative way. Through my workshops I like to encourage individual expression and help the personality of each weaver to come through”
