Beach Weaving Workshop

Tutor: Jackie Bennett
Location: Evolution Arts, 2 Sillwood Terrace, Brighton BN1 2LR
Next date: Saturday Workshop, 11 July 2020  It is likely that this workshop will be held online via Zoom and the format changed due to COVID-19.  Please check website nearer the time.

Using found objects on a beach theme, including shells and flat stones, we will create mini-looms on which to weave, choosing colours and textures of warp and weft to compliment the objects. The weaving can be as simple or elaborate as you choose, with guidance from the tutor to create the effects that you want. Create a keepsake or hanging ornament.

The workshop is suitable for those who are new to weaving and those who have done some before. All materials will be provided, including an array of natural yarns. You may bring your own beach finds if you wish. Please bring your own scissors and glasses for close-up work, if you need them.

About the tutor

Jackie teaches weaving as an art form, exhibits and undertakes commissions internationally. She has been weaving for over 20 years and teaching for 12 years. Jackie started weaving on small frames whilst on an Art and Design Foundation Course. She then studied African and Asian Art and Archaeology at SOAS, London University. She completed a Post-graduate Diploma in Tapestry Weaving, at West Dean College in 1997 and continues to work in weave, sometimes including embroidery and felt-making. She is a member of the British Tapestry Group, which promotes contemporary tapestry weaving in the UK, and the East Sussex Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.

“Tapestry weaving is definitely a slow art. It is also very rewarding as the process of weaving has a calming effect, using colour and texture in a direct, hands-on and creative way. Through my workshops I like to encourage individual expression and help the personality of each weaver to come through”

"I very much enjoy learning to weave with Jackie. She is a very patient teacher and has helped me to have confidence in weaving my own designs, assisting with the design process as well with learning the weaving techniques themselves"  Julie B
